The 36 publishers in Japan's Digital Comic Association and several American publishers are forming a coalition to combat the "rampant and growing problem" of scanlations — illicit digital copies of manga either translated by fans or scanned directly from legitimate English releases. Source Link: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-06-08/u.s-japanese-publishers-unite-against-manga-scan-sitesI don't mind if the online manga reading sites go down, and I think many would agree on that lol. However, as with piracy in general people will find ways to get what they want.

you can never stop piracy. it was hard enough to keep under control before the internet, but with the net, impossible.

I was gonna say, isn't cracking down on scanlators the next logical step for them?

Well from my understanding, they are going after these manga reading sites due to them having a large abundance of popular licensed manga, and (I think) for the fact that the owners of these websites are likely making a lot of/some spare change as well due to all the ad placement. EDIT: Also here's a newspost from another scanlation group about this recent news: http://kotonoha.monkey-pirate.com/2010/06/08/a-wake-up-call/

They'll only crank down on shit like OM and such sites.
I really don't see em going after individual scanlators. We're not the problem, big ass shit sites like OM that makes it so damned easy for idiots to read it, that's where the problem is at.
There's never been any cases where companies have gone after scanlation groups; that I know of.
Back when the scanlation biz was just tiny, before OM and that shit that made it mainstream; scanlation wasn't a problem. I'm more than looking forward to going back to those glory days.
And really, all those companies have to do is ask us to stop scanlating a series, and we would.

I think they only wanna go after those crappy online reading sites, mainly cause of the easiness of accessing it and the fact that there are apps for PSP, iPhone, and other handhelds which are designed to use these sites as well. The only reason I could see them going after scanlators is if they're the ones that just take the US manga and scan that.
I can't wait for them glory days again either...though it'd be the first time for me haha. Hmm...and maybe scanlators should form some sort of alliance or something too haha

OM is what I go on when I'm really crunched for time, or when I'm feeling lazy and not wanting to download something.
When they have licensed things though, that's an issue.

I...think so, Mangahelpers was it? ...but I see that as somewhat different due to the fact scanlation groups can control if their stuff is on there or not (speaking of which if we want to remove our account we can I think it hasn't been updated in forever I think)
