Yea I'd say go with OpenOffice, it's worth it if you don't feel like paying/pirating MSOffice in my opinion.
Or....if you happen to have a gmail account, you could give Google Docs a try.

Yeah I've been using Google Docs for a while but I tried uploading the .doc I had to it and it lost its formatting. Can't be bothered sorting it out.
I'll try openoffice. The last time I tried installing it it came up with an error. I'll redownloadn and give it another go.
