I've got (mainly): P4 processors (2.8Ghz) 2 (80GB, 40GB) hard drives 2 physical memory slots (2xDDR1 400Hz 215mb I believe, looking for more :\) GeForce 7600 GS GPU (I feel that it's not that fast, perhaps because it is using AGP port or perhaps because it is limited by the physical memory)
and a blue light stick going along the computer (waste >.>)
I want an upgrade :S - so, what is the situation on those memory chips that should replace those mechanical hard drives any day soon? - what can I do against *dramatical pause* dust? (I was thinking of getting my next computer come with filters. :x how much is water cooling?) - can I combine a UPS directly into the computer? (well, the power unit in the computer converts the power back into AC, after it has already been stored like that in batteries and converted to DC >.> it's a waste and it heats the computer)

Uriku Said: I want an upgrade :S - so, what is the situation on those memory chips that should replace those mechanical hard drives any day soon? They are still in the "not quite cheap enough" phase. I just heard today that Apple was making a laptop with that type of HD in it and there also other manufactures following suit. The main issue right now is Cost... Once the price drops, you will be seeing others doing laptops and such with them. You can already do something simmilar to the memory chips in a Compact flash card. There are readers that you can buy that enable the card to be plugged into a IDE channel. I have a small computer running with a 1 gb Compact flash card (Linux install) and it runs pretty smooth. - what can I do against *dramatical pause* dust? (I was thinking of getting my next computer come with filters. :x how much is water cooling?) There is very little you can do about dust, especaily in the region of the world you are in Uriku Filters will help, you just need to make sure you check them frequently. Electrical devices attract Dust because of the Negitively charged dust and the possitive charged electrical device. Water cooling is a good option if you are wanting to overclock, but it will make the case heavier, so don't go thinking you can carry it around easily. - can I combine a UPS directly into the computer? (well, the power unit in the computer converts the power back into AC, after it has already been stored like that in batteries and converted to DC >.> it's a waste and it heats the computer) not really... The weight issue is one thing, since a UPS has batteries that keep the charge in case of a blackout. The other issue is the fact that I don't think people have thought of something like that as being a good selling point for a computer. Most people that are interested in UPS's are only interested in it because they live in an area where they want to make sure that they can use thier computer when the power goes out, or be able to shut their system down without having to worry about the system crashing from a sudden stop. A power supply is simmilar to a battery, but it can only store power for only 5 or so seconds once the machine is turned off... Notice when you unplug the power from your power supply that the motherboard, which normally has a light takes time to go out... That is because there is still a residue charge in the power supply from the capacitors. A UPS uses batteries to store it's energy so they can last from 5 minutes for smaller units, to up to an hour of charge. I am sure eventually someone will come up with a better way of powering a computer, but really even though a power supply wastes energy, it is the most economical thing for people to build. Kind of like battery powered vehicles are better on the enviroment, but they are harder to manufacture and more expencive. Hope that answers your questions!

it's not a desert here, just a lot of (I hope) normal dust. and hairs. I didn't know that dust is drawn to the negative computer. The computer right now won't even fit into a journey bag (one of those can-store-every-thing-you-need-for-camping) bags (I know, I tried) it's not going anywhere. (plus I suppose I can take out the water if you want. maybe). well I hope I can get my next computer to have filters. (but I'd have to replace them a lot x_x)
about the power supply, I already have a UPS, and it gets DC current, stores it in the form of AC in batteries, and then converts it back to DC to the computer's power supply, which converts it back to AC. it's a shame :\

No, the UPS stores the energy as DC power... Batteries are DC not AC. We get AC current from the power outlets, that is why everything has to have a transformer in it, like radios, or TV's.
And yes, dust is drawn to electrical equipment because of the charge it has....

Yay! I missed this thread. My computer is getting outdated and old, plus I don't have my "gaming computer" anymore... XP I think my burner is going out. I keep getting these damn messages when I try to write files to normal CDs that says "Windows cannot write these files to this type of CDs, yet I had done it before... Any ideas?

It sounds like your burner is dying on you. Most burners nowadays are around 30 dollars... It would be an easy thing to replace. There really isn't anything to it. If you really wanted to try this, you could get one of the CD cleaners for the drives, although I have been told that it doesn't work with burners. Do you know if it is a CD/RW or DVD/RW? I would gather it is a DVD/RW...

take off the side of your case and remove the screws holding the drive in. It really depends on your model. tell me the Make/model of the system, or photograph it for me.

x_x I meant that. still, UPS generates the current computer needs, but it then send out AC, because a computer normally accepts AC (because that's what you get from the power line). isn't there anything I can do? (like buying a blade server xP) DVD/RW.... I've never messed with CD drives before.. Hard to install?
should be pretty easy if you have a desktop computer, only a power line, data cable and a couple of bolts that hold the reader

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_server (link to item that Uriku was talking about) the main reason why a computer needs DC instead of AC is that it doesn't have the ability to survive alternating current. (thus the need for a power supply to regulate the voltage down to a more manageable level for the computer. Servers do run on the same principles as their home brethren. They also require a transformer to provide DC voltage. The only trick is that the Blade servers use the same power supply to power multiple motherboards. So yes, it does save power and heat, but it still requires the basic power supply to convert to voltage.
