Started read the first (of the four) the other day and have made a few interesting discoveries. Or at least I found out a few things I didn't know before.
Kamina's father was called Joe, Shimon's was Takushim.
Shimon's father invented the drill before Shimon was born.

I got them from a book shop in Japan. They are the first 4 books listed here. Yes, I am considering doing a translation, but only considering right now.

Thanks for that link, kryss! Alas, I'm not literate in Japanese; but judging from the cover graphics (and your first post) my beloved Yoko gets short shrift - again. Does Gainax actually not know how popular she is out here in the real world? Oh, well.... =^..^=

I haven't got to where they meet her yet. Hopefully there'll be some background story for her too.

Shimon's mother was called Shiita (probably Sheeta). Shimon was sleeping in the bed next to his parents when the earthquake struck. The same rock that crushed his parents saved his life. That was also the first time he picked up a drill - to try and rescue them. He drilled until his hands bled.

So Shaku (Jiiha's village chief) KNEW that Kamina's Father went out onto the surface because he found Kamina walking down the stairs back to the village crying.
After getting saved by Dayakka and the folks from Rittna, Kamina tries to return Shaku's sword but Shaku tells him to take it with him.
Every wonder why no-one else leaves Jiiha? Apparently they are too scared. The ones with enough courage to go up and see the surface are relieved to go back with Shaku after Kamina and Shimon leave.

Oh goddd, this is epic! Really, thanks so much for sharing this. I've always wondered about the little extra details over Simon's parents and Kamina's dad. I didn't even know they had names, haha. xD;;
Wish I could read Japanese, because I'd be buying these books in a second.

That is.. so sad. and awesome too. I can imagine it.. Are the light novels hard to read? Might there be furigana with the Kanji (unlikely!)? If only..

*wonders if those publications are licensed in North America* [Note: that was a hint, or a word to the wise.] *assumes they're illustrated to some extent* =^..^=
