This subject has been discussed elsewhere on the board, I'm sure, but if memory serves I didn't present any photographic evidence regarding the origin of my user name Flyvapnet.  Well, here it is!

Huh

The photographs above and below show my military-surplus backpack, which I purchased a decade ago at what's called in the U.S. an "army surplus store" - although nowadays such shops seldom stock any genuine military-surplus items.  Yes, I did add the badge / insignia / symbol / whatever to the pack's top flap last year.

Notice, if you will, the printing in the center of the backpack.  Therein lies the origin of my user name!  Red and I discussed the word (or pseudo-word) "flyvapnet" at some length; but its own etymology remains a mystery.

I was told at a Björk (I'm a big fan) Web site run by a Swedish gal and populated by Scandinavians that "flyvapnet" means "air force" or something very similar.  However, upon arriving here at the AnimeCouncil board I learned its spelling is incorrect.  I suggest we form an embassy and travel to wherever this backpack was manufactured, then persuade those responsible to reveal just what's going on with that word!

It probably says FLYVÅPNET. Think i see a dot over that A.
That would make more sense. And yeah that means Air Force. Tongue

Its probably the Danish spelling of it, swedish, norwegian and danish are veeery alike.
And if i don't recall all to wrong Flekkefjord is a place in Denmark.

So it says:

Flekkefjord
Leatherware Factory

That is really quite cool. Languages always interest me.

As for my username. It's my surname shortened to form my nickname, but also spelt how you would say it. As the v would actually be a w in my full name.

Interesting. I always wondered where some of this usernames came from.

As for mine, it was a simple joke. I was on a forum and someone stated that "(Insert old nick) is soo tragic!" after I told them about some sad story. Then it just stuck around from there. I liked it from there. xP

Mine came to me one day when I was feeling depressed/frustrated. I wrote this graphic poem expressing how helpless I felt and used "Silent E" as a metaphor. Then I thought about how much more effective the imagery would be if I used "k" instead, since it's a plosive (you have to build up air and expel it all at once, like an explosion). So, because the letter is so virile and noticeable, I thought the irony of having a silent "k" more powerful.  Next, when deciding on online handles for this group, I remembered that phrase and it sounded wicked cool (like some mysterious ninja or something), so I used it.

@Red

Seriously, although I think my initial inability to communicate was more due to technological and time zone issues... I think.

Orion is a shortened version of Orion McMurry, and old name I used with an even older game called “Pirates” (Played on the Commodore 64.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Pirates! He was a sucessful pirate at the time and It's been with me for quite sometime.  I even had a Jacket made with the name embroidered on it. Most BBS'es at the time required a login name and that is where I used it as well. Connecting to BBS's over 2400 baud phone lines were way cool back in the day! Smiley  Since it is a lot longer to type that, I had shortened it to just Orion, or OrionM31. The Name derives from my favorite constellation in the night sky. M31 was suppose to be for one of the galaxies in the Belt of Orion, but that is M42. M31 is the Andromeda galaxy.

Cool!  Thanks a bunch, Red, for clearing up the mystery!  So my user name ought to be Flyvåpnet, then.  Can it be changed, here at the board?  Or is the software unfriendly toward "special characters"?

Huh

Actually, Red, I think Red is a very good user-name for someone from a Scandinavian nation.  After all, there was Eiríkr Þorvaldsson or Erik the Red; and even though he was Icelandic rather than Swedish he's nevertheless a famous Viking explorer, who founded the first successful Nordic settlement in Greenland.  (We'll skip over the part about the murders.)

Shocked

Everyone else's stories are cool, too!  Thanks, peeps, for telling them.  (I'd better shut up now, as this reply is long enough already.)

Well the wolf part is because it's the animal most closely related to my personality. Mad comes from me fooling around with friends and talking about life when something like "the first step of solving your problems is to recognize you have one" came around and we started discussing about the different personality problems the others saw on us. For me it was that i used to get angry easily and i did act like a wacko sometimes. Later that day we went to an internet cafe to play starcraft so i decided to take the nickname Mad One joking about what we had spoken earlier. I realized that MAD also represents the initials of my name(Mario Alejandro Doria) so i kept the nickname.

Time passed and eventhough being "mad" is hardly a problem for me now it represents the road i've followed to be the person i'am now so i fused it with wolf as to represent that i'm finally in way of being the person i want to be. A little complicated huh? Tongue
