U.S. Underwrites Internet Detour Around Censors Abroad - NYTimes.com
The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy “shadow” Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine repressive governments.

We need another "shadow" Internet to combat corporate censorship.  DRMs, EULAs, ISPs, corporate Web-site owners:  They're all crap and deserve to be rubbed out, or at least circumvented.

There is already a "Darknet" where anyone is free to post or talk about anything and it's all encrypted and secure. Though of course with something being No Rules there are sites with content you wouldn't want to see, but usually you'll know what kind of stuff a site has before going to it. Anywho the more common one is Tor if you're running your web browser through Tor you can access sites with the TLD .onion and aside from that there's Freenet, I2P and a few others I believe.

Thanks for that information, Jun!  I'm going to snout around and see what I can find ... in the darkness.

Cool

You can get stuff related to Tor here: https://www.torproject.org/
And this is the address for core.onion: http://eqt5g4fuenphqinx.onion/
It won't be reachable unless your browser is configured to use Tor, they also have "Tor Browser" that gives you a pre-conf'd browser ^_^ and again, be careful on the darknet

Thanks for the additional information, Jun!  Well, I installed Tor last night but the Tor-specific Firefox 3.18 "portable" browser kept giving me trouble:  It would tell me an updated version of the browser was available, but when I'd install it another dialog box would inform me I was no longer connected to Tor.  Plus, it would uninstall my Firefox 5.0 browser and install the (apparently) non-Tor Firefox 3.19 "updated" browser right over it, even though I'd put all the Tor stuff on an entirely different disk drive.  Hmm.

Huh

After three of those go-rounds I decided to give it all a rest.  Maybe I'll give Tor another shot tonight.  (The Darknet only works at night, when it's dark, right?)  But seriously, I shall heed your advice and exert extreme caution if and when I dare enter The Realm of the Darknet!

Shocked
